The Method

How Snake School Works

Our unique 12-station approach is unlike anything else offered in rattlesnake avoidance training. Your dog is exposed to various sized rattlesnakes in various positions and conditions — different scent exposures, different sound conditions, different visual presentations — totaling at least 12 identification and avoidance opportunities in a single session. The final 4 stations are dedicated to proofing, confirming and verifying the effectiveness of the training before your dog leaves.

Stations 1–3
👃
Scent Introduction

Your dog learns to identify the scent of a live rattlesnake across multiple exposures — different snake sizes, different conditions — before they ever see one.

Stations 4–6
👁️
Visual Recognition

Dogs learn to recognize rattlesnakes visually — varying sizes, positions, and movement patterns — building a firm and reliable avoidance association.

Stations 7–8
🔊
Sound Conditioning

The rattle is the last warning before a strike. We train dogs to respond immediately across varied sound conditions and distances.

Stations 9–12
Proofing

The final 4 stations verify and confirm the training. Your dog must demonstrate clear, reliable avoidance before they graduate — no guesswork, no assumptions.

The Snake Wranglers

The Experts Behind the Snakes

Safe rattlesnake avoidance training requires more than a skilled dog trainer — it requires certified professionals who handle live rattlesnakes with expertise and care. Meet the father-son team who make our training sessions possible.

Cary Quashen
Lead Rattlesnake Wrangler · Co-Founder
Cary Quashen

Cary is a well-known Santa Clarita Valley community leader and the face of The Snake School's rattlesnake wrangling operation. A passionate advocate for wildlife safety and co-existence, Cary has made it his mission to educate families and pet owners about living safely alongside rattlesnakes in Southern California. When a rattlesnake shows up where it's not welcome, Cary is the one people call — and he handles every encounter with calm, respect for the animal, and a deep commitment to public safety. His hands-on experience with live rattlesnakes is central to what makes our avoidance training so effective.

Scott works alongside his father Cary as part of The Snake School's wrangling team, bringing a shared passion for rattlesnake safety and wildlife education to every session. Together, Cary and Scott co-founded The Snake School for Dogs with lead trainer Britany Morano — combining expert dog training with professional rattlesnake handling to create one of the most comprehensive avoidance programs in Southern California. Scott's role ensures every training session runs safely, smoothly, and with the highest standard of care for both the animals and the dogs being trained. After consulting with expert herpetologists on the matter of muzzled rattlesnakes, Scott will never handle another live muzzled rattlesnake again — read on below for more information.

"We're seeing more rattlesnakes this year than ever before. In the last three weeks of March 2026, we got over 100 calls for rattlesnakes in Santa Clarita alone. Rattlesnakes are invading Santa Clarita!"

Rattlesnake safely contained during training
Our Safety Standard

We Will Never Expose Your Dog to an Uncontained Rattlesnake

Every rattlesnake used in our training is inside a secure containment unit. Your dog never has direct access to the snake — and that is non-negotiable. Not a preference. A standard.

Your dog learns to avoid the real thing — the scent, the movement, the sound — without ever being put at risk. That's the Snake School difference.
Our Facilities

Two Ranches. Both Ours.

We don't rent parks. We don't borrow fields. We don't share space with the public. The Snake School owns both of its training properties — which means your session happens on our terms, on our schedule, with zero interference.

📍 Santa Clarita, CA
Our 20-Acre
Ranch Facility

Our main training facility is a private 20-acre working ranch in Santa Clarita. With this much open space, we run full 12-station rattlesnake avoidance courses in a controlled environment that mirrors the real outdoor terrain your dog navigates every day — hills, brush, open land, and all.

🐍 Rattlesnake Avoidance
📍 Lebec, CA — Near Fort Tejon
Our Lebec
Mountain Ranch

Nestled in the mountains near old Fort Tejon — about 60 miles north of Los Angeles — our Lebec ranch is a stunning, rugged property surrounded by oak trees, open hillsides, and genuine rattlesnake country. We have a beautiful 12-station course set up here, giving your dog the full training experience in exactly the kind of wild environment where real encounters happen.

The property is also home to our therapy animals, including horses and pigs, and serves as the location for Cornerstone Companions' therapeutic horseback riding program. And it's a place of second chances — the Lebec ranch operates as a canine rescue, giving dogs in need a safe haven, care, and a path to a forever home.

🏡
No canceled events. No scheduling conflicts. No public interference.

Most trainers rent parks or use borrowed land — which means events get canceled, locations change last minute, and strangers walk through mid-session. Because we own both properties, none of that happens. You book, we're there, and your dog gets the full, uninterrupted session they deserve.

Real Stories

What Dog Parents Are Saying

★★★★★

My Australian Shepherd used to investigate everything. After Snake School, she completely avoided a coiled rattler on our morning hike. This training saved her life — I have zero doubt about it.

Sarah M.
Owner of Winnie, 3-year-old Aussie
★★★★★

Worth every single penny. My lab mix came across a rattler six weeks after training and gave it a wide berth. Before Snake School? He would've gone nose-first into danger.

Mike T.
Owner of Bear, 2-year-old Lab Mix
★★★★★

The trainers were professional and incredibly caring. My dog wasn't traumatized — she was just trained. The session was calm, efficient, and well-organized. 100% recommend.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my dog need to be?
Dogs should be at least 3–4 months old and have completed core vaccinations. There is no upper age limit — older dogs learn just as well as puppies.
Is the training safe for my dog?
Absolutely. Snakes are handled by certified professionals. No dog has ever been bitten during a properly conducted Snake School session. Your dog's safety is our top priority.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last 1–2 years. We recommend an annual refresher for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors in snake country.
What should I bring to class?
Bring your dog on a standard leash (no retractable leashes) and proof of current vaccinations. Water is provided but feel free to bring extra for your pup.
Does it work on all snake species?
Our training focuses on rattlesnakes — the most dangerous venomous snakes in North America. The conditioning also generalizes to many other pit vipers.
Do I need to stay during training?
Yes — we encourage all pet parents to observe the session and receive guidance on reinforcing the training during outdoor adventures.
