Welcome to Snake School

This is the best rattlesnake avoidance training program you'll find in California.

Why Choose The Snake School

Safer & More Effective Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs

Twelve things the quick parking-lot clinics and muzzled-snake programs simply can't offer.

Securely Contained

Every rattlesnake stays in a secure, purpose-built cage your dog can't reach.

No Dangerous Muzzles

Our snakes are caged, never muzzled — no slipping, no unnatural behavior.

More Realistic

More realistic live-snake encounters than other programs.

More Encounters

More live-snake exposures than the typical quick clinic.

Isolated Sensory Exposures

Each sense — scent, sound, sight — trained on its own, plus full encounters.

Not the Quick Version

A complete avoidance course, not the rushed pass that doesn't always hold.

Non-Traumatizing

Paced to each dog's anxiety level to prevent shut-down.

Humane E-Collar Work

Premium e-collar with positive reinforcement at the lowest setting — no blasting.

One-on-One

Private sessions — could save $3,000–$10,000 in anti-venom costs and your dog's life.

You Join Us

You walk the course alongside us and your dog the whole way.

Huge Facilities

Private 20-acre training ranch — or we come to your location.

More Effective

A complete, realistic method built so avoidance actually sticks.

Owners walking the course beside their dog during rattlesnake avoidance training
Hands-On, Together

You walk the course, right beside your dog.

This is never a drop-off. You're with us for the whole session, walking your dog station by station — and your positive reinforcement is a key part of locking in a lasting avoidance response.

How Dogs Are Trained

Every sense, trained on its own.

A Snake School trainer teaching a dog to recognize rattlesnake scent on the ranch 2 Stations
Scent TrainingRecognizing the Snake by Smell

We train your dog to recognize and avoid rattlesnake scent — including the snake's musk and droppings, a major real-world signal in the wild. So a hidden snake gets detected and avoided by smell, before your dog ever sees or hears it — trained across two stations, with proofing.

A hidden Bluetooth speaker used to play rattlesnake sounds during sound-only avoidance training 2 Stations
Sound-Only TrainingThe Rattle, on a Hidden Speaker

As your dog approaches, we play adult and baby rattlesnake sounds — isolated, real recordings — through a hidden Bluetooth speaker — training isolated recognition and avoidance of the rattle itself. So even when your dog can't see or smell the snake, they still learn to turn away on sound alone.

A dog approaching a muzzled non-venomous gopher snake on the ground during sight training 2 Stations
Safe Sight TrainingMuzzled Gopher Snakes — Never Rattlesnakes

For the sight stations we use muzzled non-venomous gopher snakes — both large adults and babies — so your dog learns to recognize snakes of every size and can walk right up to one on the ground, with zero risk. The rattlesnakes always stay caged. There's no such thing as a safe muzzled rattlesnake.

Live rattlesnakes coiled inside a secure wire containment unit — the final den test 4 Stations
Full Sensory Exposure · The Final TestLive Caged Rattlesnake Encounters

Your dog encounters four live rattlesnake stations — adult, juvenile, and baby, every one securely caged — building to the final den: a cluster of live rattlesnakes coiled together, securely contained, with no prompts, no cues, no corrections. When your dog turns and walks away on its own, this isn't training anymore. It's instinct.

A Snake School trainer rewarding a dog with a treat at a decoy station on the ranch
Decoy & Treat StationsMimic Stations, Sticks & Treats

Between the real snakes, we seed the course with decoys — a coiled hose, scattered sticks — and mimic-stations paired with treats. Your dog learns to read shape and movement, stays relaxed, and finishes the course food-motivated and confident.

Why Dog Owners Choose Us

Not all rattlesnake training is created equal.

Your other options: the one full 12-station program that muzzles its rattlesnakes, or quick parking-lot clinics that cage their snakes but only run a rushed pass. We're the complete 12-station course on a 20-acre ranch — every rattlesnake securely caged, never muzzled. Here's how we compare.

The Other 12-Station Course

The only other full 12-station program holds its live rattlesnakes shut with a muzzle. Muzzles slip and fail — handlers get bitten, and the snake behaves unnaturally, so your dog learns the wrong picture.

5-Minute Clinics

Local quick classes cage their snakes safely — but run a single rushed pass in a parking lot. It's quick and cheap, and too brief to build a response that holds in the real world.

The Snake School

The complete 12-station course on our 20-acre ranch — every rattlesnake securely caged, never muzzled. Vet-recommended, with dozens of 5-star reviews.

We Solve a Real Problem

There's no such thing as a safe muzzled rattlesnake.

The only other full 12-station program uses live rattlesnakes held shut by a muzzle — and muzzles slip and fail, handlers get bitten, and the snake behaves unnaturally. We do it differently: every rattlesnake securely caged, never muzzled. And it's not just safer — it's more effective, much safer, more humane, less traumatizing, at a better price point, and run by friendlier people.

How Dogs Are Trained to Recognize Rattlesnakes

Isolated Sensory Exposures and Live Snake Encounters

Rattlesnake scent avoidance training station — dog learns to identify rattlesnake odor
Step 01 — Scent
Scent Only

Your dog learns to identify the unmistakable scent of a rattlesnake — the first and most powerful trigger for avoidance in the wild.

Rattlesnake sound avoidance training station — dog trained to respond to rattle
Step 02 — Sound
Sound Only

The rattle is one of nature's most distinct warning sounds. We train your dog to recognize it and flee — before a strike is ever possible.

Rattlesnake sight avoidance training station — dog trained to visually recognize rattlesnake
Step 03 — Sight
Sight Only

Dogs are trained to visually recognize the shape and movement of a rattlesnake — reinforcing avoidance even at a distance.

Full sensory rattlesnake avoidance training — scent, sound, and sight combined for maximum avoidance
Step 04 — Combined
Full Sensory Exposure

All three sensory channels activated simultaneously — the final stage that locks in a complete, reliable avoidance response.

What families say after Snake School.

Real feedback from dog owners who trained with us — recapped from their post-training debriefs.

"This is a way improved version of rattlesnake avoidance training for dogs. I have a highly anxious and sensitive dog, and Scott and Shane handled this very well. My dog left non-traumatized, and highly prepared for rattlesnake encounters."
Jessica Snake School Graduate
"This program is excellent and a huge improvement on what I've done before. In the other program, the snakes were hooded, stretched out, and behaved completely unnaturally — they didn't even rattle. Your snakes present real-world encounters in realistic places where snakes would be. This is a better program, 100%."
Wayne Snake School Graduate
"Baxter and Stevie were trained very well. They're as prepared as they possibly could be for a real-world rattlesnake encounter."
Patti & Tom Snake School Graduates
"Thank you guys for training my German Shepherd — the rattlesnake training could not have gone better or been performed better."
Michael Snake School Graduate
"My sheepadoodle did so well. We focused heavily on positive reinforcement, and he quickly learned that rattlesnakes are a big no-no. I highly recommend training your dog at the Snake School!"
Mike Snake School Graduate
"I love my GSP so much and felt absolutely wonderful getting him trained. You walk the course with the two handlers and join in on the positive reinforcement when your dog shows positive avoidance. The trainer handles the corrections. But your dog will learn quickly to avoid the rattlesnakes on his/her own — at least Oakley did. My dog left this course completely non-traumatized, and I'm so happy that I did this. Feel so much better. Thanks guys!"
Jessica A. Snake School Graduate
"Denny and Lilly were trained very well. Highly recommend rattlesnake avoidance training with the Snake School."
Dennis Snake School Graduate
"This is a highly professional rattlesnake avoidance training program for dogs that we can't recommend enough."

"This is the best possible snake avoidance program. If you live by a hill, you really need to get your dogs trained in rattlesnake avoidance. This is the place to do it!"

"My 2 dogs were a bit rambunctious and are still puppies but I think they learned a lot. This was a great course. I'm going to recommend my friends and neighbors!"
Francie Snake School Graduate
"My dog learned so much! He's snake safe now. I want to volunteer with you guys. Thank you so much."
Seth Snake School Graduate
"My dog didn't naturally avoid the snakes at first, but learned during the course. I'm feeling so much better, and really think he will stay away from snakes now! Thanks guys."

"Hey Scott! Thanks again for training Kitty. Wanted to see if you could train Cleo's two little dogs next. Proud puppy parents ahahah!"

"This was my first session with the dog I have now, and after Snake School I feel confident taking him hunting with me. He'll be off leash and working the entire time — and now I know he'll avoid a rattlesnake if he comes across one."
Shane Snake School Graduate
"I brought 3 dogs. Two were naturally avoidant right away — the third needed more correction. They adjusted the training for each dog individually. My fourth one is coming next week."
Beth Snake School Graduate
"So Happy with The Snake School! After a close encounter with a rattlesnake on the trail near our home, we had been worried about our dog Barley's safety — also being off-leash much of the time. We are now confident that Barley is prepared to avoid a rattlesnake should an encounter happen in the future. Thank you Snake School :)"

"Both Shane and Scott are two of the nicest guys imaginable. My dogs took to them right off and the training is exceptional. Both my dogs are older so their senses do not allow them to respond to all the stimuli right away but I was blown away by the way Shane and Scott adapted the training to give them the best protection possible. I can't recommend this training highly enough and it's an absolute pleasure to give them this five star review."

"My dogs are trained hunting dogs — I was worried a standard course wouldn't cut it. They adapted the whole session around where my dogs specifically needed work. I left genuinely impressed. Honestly I'd volunteer here if I could."

Fred Snake School Graduate
"I came in nervous. Left feeling like my dog was actually safe. Night and day."
Angeline Snake School Graduate
"Very professional people who took good care of us and our dog. The course is laid out well with plenty of safe snake encounters to familiarize the dog with the sight, sound, and smell of rattlesnakes. So important in our area of SoCal."
Patti Sternau Google Review
"Better than I expected, honestly. My dog and I both had a great time. I know my dog will avoid snakes now."
Melanie Champion Dog Trainer · Snake School Graduate
"The snake school was a great experience for our 4 dogs. The handlers were gentle and calm, walking the dogs through the different stations and reworking the stations that they showed some signs of struggle with. All 4 dogs passed the course and it was clear they wanted to avoid the snakes!"
Sara Snake School Graduate

"Winston and I just took The Snake School for Dogs, and I think I said, 'This is the best money I've ever spent,' at least five times during the class LOL

Before signing up, I had heard so many amazing things about them from people at the dog park and online, so my expectations were high. Somehow, they still exceeded them.

I had recently moved to Santa Clarita and reached out to ask about their summer discount. They were kind enough to extend it to me, which meant Winston and I were able to take the class during our very first week living in rattlesnake country. That generosity alone meant a lot.

What really impressed me was how incredible Shane and Scott were with Winston. He's usually pretty timid around men, but he warmed up to both of them almost immediately. They were patient, encouraging, and made the whole experience feel comfortable and stress-free.

And the training works FAST!! I was honestly shocked. By the second station, Winston was already avoiding the snakes and their scent entirely. The results started before we had even finished the class. Watching him make those decisions on his own was amazing!

As a dog owner, there's nothing better than feeling like you've done everything you can to keep your pup safe, and that's exactly how I left feeling. Living in Santa Clarita, where rattlesnakes are a real concern, this class gave me so much peace of mind.

More than anything, it's obvious that Shane and Scott genuinely care about dogs and the people who love them. You can tell this isn't just a business to them. They truly want to keep dogs safe.

If you have a dog and live anywhere rattlesnakes are around, take the class!! 💓"

"I had a fantastic experience with The Snake School for Dogs rattlesnake avoidance training. Shane and Scott were both incredibly friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They took the time to explain the training process and made sure I understood how the program works. I was really impressed that they used live rattlesnakes in a safe, controlled environment, along with rattlesnake scent and sound, to teach dogs to recognize and avoid the danger. It gave me confidence that my dog, Kalani, was getting realistic, effective training that could make a real difference. I highly recommend this training to anyone with a dog who hikes, camps, and lives in California — it's an invaluable investment in your dog's safety, and well worth it, because an emergency trip to the vet for a snake bite can cost upwards of $5,000!"

"My 22-pound Cockapoo has been bitten before and almost didn't make it. I live in the mountains of SCV, and I feel confident my dog is now best protected against rattlesnakes. You guys are great. Thank you so much for yesterday!"
Angie Snake School Graduate
"Thank you for working with me. I don't like snakes at all, so Scott & Shane took Ginger on the course while I relaxed at the table. Since Ginger's been bitten before, this was so important!"
Gladys Snake School Graduate
"This was an excellent rattlesnake avoidance training session. I was very satisfied with the extra scent work they did, and I appreciated the muzzled gopher snake so my dog could safely walk right up to a snake on the ground. The other snake school did not train my dog like this — afterward it had walked right on top of a snake. Good job!"
Rao Snake School Graduate
"Thank you for working with Hank. He was naturally pretty avoidant of snakes, but needed the extra training to recognize the scent in case he can't see the snake or hear the rattle. He did very well, and we're confident."

"Not only was this a great training, but Scott and Shane were great with the kids. They had so much fun and learned a lot about snakes — they even got to hold the harmless gopher snakes and wear them like a necklace. A great experience. And Ace is rattlesnake ready!"
Jenn Snake School Graduate
"Honestly, this was a great experience. I live in the mountains, up against a hill, and there are a lot of snakes. I'm very happy with the training — and with their offer for free refreshers in the same season. This is a great training program."
