Meet the team

The people behind The Snake School.

Dog trainers, a rattlesnake handler, an animal-welfare specialist and a training assistant. Every session is run by people who understand both dogs and rattlesnakes.

Founder & Lead Trainer

Scott Quashen

Scott founded The Snake School and leads every session. He brings a lifetime with dogs and 5+ years of rattlesnake wrangling alongside his father, Cary — and works as a Snake Safety Officer on major film & TV productions.

He learned 12-station rattlesnake avoidance training under one of the top trainers in the country — and saw that program making huge mistakes: the snakes weren’t safely managed, and handlers and dogs were at constant risk. So he built something safer and more thorough, with every rattlesnake securely caged and never muzzled.

Cary Quashen

Cary has over 40 years of rattlesnake handling experience — a fascination that started when he was a little kid — and 40 years working with dogs. A well-known SCV community leader and wildlife safety advocate, he has safely removed 1,300+ rattlesnakes from homes around Santa Clarita.

When a rattlesnake shows up where it’s not welcome, Cary is the one people call — handling every encounter with calm, expertise, and deep respect for the animal. Local Los Angeles Fire Department officials recommend him by name.

In her words

“‘Grew up around dogs’ is an understatement for me! My mom had a dog boarding business when I was younger, so I was exposed to all different sizes and temperaments of dogs, and I loved them all. The love of dogs and all animals followed me into adulthood — not just having my own, but being a pet sitter and looking after and loving on other people’s animals.
Every animal is so different and has such a unique personality — even the snakes! The variety of needs and constantly changing demands keeps me super passionate about pet sitting and this job!”

Scent Detection Dog Trainer

Apani D.

Apani is a Santa Clarita local with a background in hands-on animal training. Before joining Snake School, she spent three years as a ranch and animal trainer, working with ranch dogs on obedience, recall, focus, and the real-world skills a working dog needs. She also trained horses and riders with an emphasis on safety and calm, confident handling.

She recently graduated from a scent-detection dog training program — training dogs to detect drugs, explosives, invasive mussels, and more.

Her training approach is grounded in positive reinforcement and close observation of each dog’s behavior, energy, and comfort level. She has experience in scent work, agility, and service dog training, and she’s especially patient with anxious or high-energy dogs. Just as important, she knows how to explain what’s happening to owners so the training sticks once they’re home.

How we work together

Every dog gets a full team.

Two to three handlers

Every dog is worked by two to three handlers together, one-on-one, from the first station to the last.

Pros handle the snakes

Live rattlesnakes are managed only by experienced handlers — securely caged, never muzzled, never within reach of your dog.

Welfare built in

Stress-detection and heat-safety protocols keep every session safe and humane for the animals on both sides of the leash.
