Keep Rattlesnakes
Out of Your Yard

Snake fencing is the only method with documented effectiveness. Everything else is folklore. Here's what actually works — and what to stop wasting money on.

Important — Updated Veterinary Guidance

The Canine Rattlesnake Vaccine Is No Longer Recommended.

Before you stock up on vaccines as a prevention strategy: as of 2025, the major veterinary toxicology consensus and the USDA itself have moved away from the rattlesnake vaccine. It does not meaningfully reduce mortality, hospital stays, or antivenin needs.

  • License Lost
USDA did not renew the vaccine's license in 2025 — citing insufficient efficacy data.
  • 272 Cases
Peer-reviewed retrospective study found no significant difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated dogs.
  • 25–30%
Of strikes are "dry bites" — explaining most anecdotal vaccine "success" stories.

Specifications

Snake Fencing
Done Right

Not all snake fencing is created equal. These are the specifications that actually work — based on published research and field-tested installation standards.

Snake Fencing Specifications

¼″
Mesh Size
Quarter-inch hardware cloth stops juveniles — the most commonly encountered and most venomous-per-size snakes.
36″
Minimum Height
Rattlesnakes are poor climbers but can scale rough surfaces. Smooth, rigid mesh at 36 inches is the standard minimum.
4–6″
Burial Depth
Burying the base prevents snakes from pushing under gaps — especially important on uneven terrain or soft soil.
Tight
Gate Seals
Gates are the most common failure point. Brush seals at the bottom and overlapping side gaskets are required to close the gap.

Myths & Misinformation

What Doesn't Work

These products are sold in every hardware store in Santa Clarita. None of them have been shown to deter rattlesnakes in peer-reviewed or field studies.

Mothballs (Naphthalene)
Toxic to pets and children. UC IPM explicitly states there is no evidence naphthalene deters snakes. Widely sold, completely ineffective.
Sulfur Powder
A persistent folk remedy with no peer-reviewed support. Snakes have been filmed crossing sulfur lines without hesitation in controlled settings.
Cinnamon & Essential Oils
No controlled evidence. Rattlesnakes rely primarily on heat-sensing pit organs and tongue-based chemoreception — ambient scents are not a deterrent.
Ultrasonic Devices
Rattlesnakes are functionally deaf to airborne sound. They detect ground vibration through their jawbones — ultrasonic emitters have no effect.
Vibration Stakes
The vibration amplitude from solar stakes is far below the threshold needed to influence snake movement. Field data shows no measurable effect.
Fake Owls & Decoys
Rattlesnakes do not have the visual processing to identify or respond to static predator decoys. No credible study supports their use as snake deterrents.
