The veterinary community is genuinely split on e-collars — we're not going to pretend otherwise. Here's what the real evidence says, what "used properly" actually means in practice, the medical conditions where we simply won't use one, and why our specific protocol has been reviewed by veterinary offices and professional trainers directly.
"Do e-collars hurt dogs?" doesn't have a single honest answer, because it depends entirely on how one is used. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) has a formal position statement opposing aversive tools, including e-collars, outright — we're naming that directly rather than pretending it doesn't exist. At the same time, the specific objections raised — imprecise timing, correction levels set too high, use on dogs who shouldn't be corrected at all — describe amateur or generic use, not a professional protocol built to avoid exactly those failure points.
Our position: a properly calibrated e-collar, set to the lowest level that produces a response, delivered by a trained professional at the precise moment it matters, paired with positive reinforcement, and never used on a dog with a disqualifying medical condition, is a fundamentally different thing than what most criticism of the tool is actually describing.
AVSAB's position is unambiguous: aversive methods, e-collars included, "should not be used under any circumstances," and the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE) goes further, noting that even low-level stimulation is aversive by definition — the dog is still responding to something it wants to avoid. We think a report that claims universal veterinary approval while that position statement exists would be dishonest, so we're leading with it instead of hiding it.
Where we disagree isn't with the underlying concern — a poorly used e-collar absolutely can hurt a dog, physically and behaviorally. Where we disagree is with the idea that every use of the tool looks the same. A department-store collar set too high by an untrained owner, and a single, professionally administered correction calibrated to a specific dog's lowest working level, are not the same intervention, even though they're built from the same underlying technology.
Modern e-collars aren't the crude, single-level shock devices the term "shock collar" still conjures up. Ours offer 100+ graduated stimulation levels, and the entire first step of every session is finding a specific dog's lowest working level — the faintest setting that produces any visible response at all, often nothing more than an ear flick or a brief pause. That's before conditioning ever starts.
At a properly calibrated working level, the sensation is closer to a mild muscle-stim tap than anything resembling a "shock." It's uncomfortable enough for a dog to want to avoid it — that's the entire mechanism a correction relies on — but it isn't pain, and it doesn't need to be pain to work.
Calibration only means something if the collar behind it is reliable. We use brand-new, top-grade professional collars — not consumer-grade units — in three sizes, fitted to the dog in front of us, from the smallest micro breeds up to Great Danes. That range matters: a collar sized wrong, or worn out from repeated use, can't deliver a consistent, precise stimulation level no matter how carefully it's set. Ours can, every time.
Just as important as the level is the timing. A correction has to land in the exact instant a dog notices the snake — off by even a fraction of a second, and the association forms with the wrong thing entirely. That precision is a dedicated trainer's responsibility alone, which is exactly why every session is run by a professional, never left to a generic setting or a first-time handler.
The most-cited welfare study on e-collars (China, Mills & Cooper, 2020) is genuinely mixed, and we're not going to selectively quote the half that's convenient. Cortisol levels in e-collar-trained dogs didn't differ significantly from reward-only dogs — but those same dogs did spend more time visibly tense and yawned more often, both recognized stress-adjacent behaviors.
That study, like most of the e-collar welfare literature, examined repeated training sessions over weeks, run with a single blanket approach rather than an individually calibrated one. That's a materially different context from a single, one-time, professionally-run avoidance session — deliberately calibrated per dog, paired throughout with positive reinforcement, rather than repeated correction-only obedience drilling. We don't think that distinction erases the underlying concern, which is exactly why calibration, timing, and screening — not just intentions — are the actual safeguards.
A properly used e-collar isn't right for every dog, and we screen for this before a leash is ever clipped on. The same caution principles used for any electrical stimulation device apply here — the same reasons a human wouldn't use a TENS unit with an implanted cardiac device or uncontrolled epilepsy translate directly to dogs.
Any sudden sensation, stress spike, or arousal jump can lower the seizure threshold in a dog with a known seizure disorder. We don't use an e-collar on these dogs — we build a training plan without one instead.
Dogs with diagnosed cardiac conditions are excluded from e-collar use as a standard precaution, the same way electrical stimulation is avoided around any compromised cardiac system.
Dermatitis, open sores, or significant skin sensitivity at the neck can turn simple contact into real discomfort, independent of the stimulation itself. We adjust placement or skip the collar entirely.
A dog already shut down by fear or a documented trauma history doesn't need an aversive layered on top. These dogs are trained with an adjusted, reward-forward plan instead.

We'd rather make that case honestly than pretend the debate doesn't exist.
